The institute was registered under Registration of Societies Act XXI of 1860 in September, 1971. The Institute has started another branch at Salem, Tamilnadu in December 1982. The Institute is recognized as a research organization by Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. It is also recognized by, Kolkata University, Kolkata, Sambalpur University and Berhampur University, Orissa as a research center for conducting Ph.D. work on Applied Sciences. The general guide lines for research are laid down by a Research Advisory Committee (RAC).
The Principal objective of the institute is to develop super quality new and special products and improvement on existing products in the field of ceramics, refractories for high temperature applications and cement.
Besides conducting own fundamental and applied research, Institute accepts research projects on development of new products processes in the field ceramics and cement from any organizations, including Government, Semi-Government and private sectors.
